Journal # 5 - Mikaela

Part 1:
The reality of the impact of the coronavirus is really starting to set in for me this week. When announcements were first made, my mom asked me to leave my apartment at school to come back home. I figured this was a quick passing and that in about a week I’d be back at my apartment with my friends. But as this is my third week at home and I am now really realizing that this is not something that is just passing quickly. Doing work while at home has been incredibly challenging as our internet has been crashing without warning and we can’t get anyone to fix it yet.
More than anything though, this season of life has shown me how important it is never to take anything for granted. For instance, while stuck in quarantine my extended family and I have been coming up with creative ways to entertain one another. My family is very close and not being able to see each other freely has been very odd. So at least once a week we get on a group facetime call with all 17 of us. Each call we have a different theme. Our most recent was revisiting our trip to Hawaii over the past summer as we pretended to be back in the warm and beautiful weather.

Part 2:
“One of the great pleasures of writing creative nonfiction is the opportunity it gives you to go from thought to thought, and from one place and time to the next” (page 196.
I felt this quote was very important for me to remember before writing a creative nonfiction piece. Generally when I think of nonfiction I think “blah, this will be boring”. But this quote reminds me that it really just brings true stories into light which is in fact very entertaining to relive and hear.
